Woodworking advice needed.

I want to recreate a prop from the anime series Bleach, but since I don't know anything about anything I wanted to ask for the opinion of people who know about working with wood.

It's this badge. It's basically palm-sized, the back is blank, there's the little handle part on the top, the design is symmetrical and there's a lowered part in the middle which has the detail etched in, and I guess the eyes are hollowed out. They glow in the anime but I don't intend to recreate that. The cracks aren't really necessary.

My questions are:

1. How difficult would it be to recreate? It's a simple design so I think that part would be easy, but I wouldn't have a clue how to carve out the middle properly like that.
How expensive would it be/how much work, roughly, if someone who did stuff like this was commissioned for it?
I guess it would be easiest to use one piece for the inside and then make the border and glue it all together or something rather than carving it out of one piece, but then there'd be joint lines.

2. Although the series says that it's made of wood, there's never any visible wood grain in the art style for it. Would it be possible to achieve that finish using wood?

These are available widely made from metal for about $6, but since it's supposed to be wood, I'm just wondering whether it would really be worth the trouble for the extra accuracy of an animated prop or not.

Thanks in advance for any insight!
