Having coveted several grails over the past couple of years, but without the necessary funds or items to trade, I decided to make my own and share the results.
I used reference pics to work out a basic shape and size and made a stencil. Cut a piece of hardboard to the right diameter for the base, and shaped a piece of plasticard over one of my leftover Dalek hemispheres for the top. I used some putty to secure both to either end of a cut down old glue stick after securing a bolt in the bottom of the base.
After setting, it was just a case of sticking the base in a drill, adding some air drying clay / body filler and using the stencil to get the basic shape whilst rotating on the drill. Then lots of sanding, with the rotating action of the drill making it a lot easier to get a roughly circular shape.
It's by no means perfect, but it's close enough. Removed the bolt and filled and sanded the bottom.
Now just have to paint and have ordered a gold leafing kit. Not bad for a few hours work.
Will post some pics when all finished.
