Okay, this doesn't qualify as a replica, but I want to use a Sega Menacer light gun as a raygun prop, in a low-budget short sci-fi movie.
I want it to look cooler than "an old toy picked up from a dumpster". I know the most obvious way to do that is to give it a paint job, but I've never painted anything, so I would like to get some technical suggestions on how to proceed.
If anyone is unfamiliar with the shape or color of the original object, this is an unmodified Sega Menacer:

And this is a rough sketch, made in 10 minutes in Paint Shop Pro, of how I want to change the colors:

Specifically:
Main body of the gun = metallic silver
Front/upper part of the gun = metallic blue (ideally, the same shade as the blue parts of the Star Trek phaser rifle in this post)
Ring in front of the gun = metallic silver
Gun stock = metallic blue
Scope support = metallic blue
Scopes = metallic silver
The stock, scope support and scopes can be detached to be painted separately; the main body of the gun is made out of two halves, kept together with screws, that can be separated to free the red ring in front of the gun.
Now... how do I proceed, to paint it? From reading other posts about painting things, I suppose I must first get something called "primer", spray it on the various pieces, and then spray the various colors. Do I have it right?
What is primer (Yeah, I told you I'm a n00b)? Are there any different kinds of primer, and in case there are, what kind must I choose?
After I applied the primer, how long do I have to wait before spraying the actual colors?
What kind of colors do I need? (the material is plastic and I want to give it a metallic look)
What other steps are involved in this kind of paint job?
