Alright, this is my first thread on the RPF so let's see how well this goes. I'm taking a step out of my comfort zone by posting this before I'm actually finished but I wanted to ask for advice.
The project is the sword that Altair uses in the game Assassin's Creed. I'm making it out of wood and attempting to reinforce it with a threaded metal rod. The reinforcement is because I chose to make it out of three separate pieces of wood. The idea occurred to me that I could have made the handle and blade out of one piece of wood and added the cross guard, but I was already halfway into the project so I decided to keep going and not worry about what could have been.
There seemed to be a lot of different interpretations of the sword and I had trouble finding a clear in-game image of it so I just tried to do what I felt best resembled it. I also have limited tools so I just tried to get everything as close as possible. Sorry for the bad cell phone pictures.
It's not actually all attached yet. I'm going to carve the detail into the handle and cross guard first, give everything a good sanding and then attach it all together.
What I need advice on is the painting part. I've never done a project like this before so I don't know what kind of paint or sealer to use. Does it matter? Does latex paint work well for this type of thing? Do I need to use something really strong like Rustoleom or is any brand going to do the job? Any advice would be appreciated on the paint as well as on anything else you notice. Thanks in advance. Also thanks to Fevereon for posting all of the Assassin's Creed stuff here and elsewhere (that's been a huge resource) and for answering some questions I've had. I ended up going a different way but I got some good advice and ideas.
