Sankara Stones WIP

$

For the past few months I've been aching to get a set of Sankara stones for my collection, and with some extra clay and a little (notice the word little) time on my hands I figured I could start work on a prop set I've always wanted.
I started off with a few stills from the film and a single image of the stunt/light up stones from the archives and the "From StarWars to Indiana Jones" book. The images were scanned into my printer and matched up with the other images. They were scaled to the proportions listed in the archives book and all matched up to make sure that each stone was proportionate and correct.
Then they were sculpted from Air dry clay using a sanded-down soda can filled with plaster for the base/skeleton of the sculpture, because the soda can is the perfect size for a base for 2/3 of the stones. For now I have only finished "Stone #3" and am going to begin "Stone #1" today. Why am I saving "Stone #2" for last you may ask? The answer is simple: I can't find a base small enough to sculpt on yet that I liked (considering a short and wide piece of PVC pipe).
The reason I am using air dry clay is because it provides a hard, sandable surface for me to add and remove surface area as I please without squishing and deforming the object at hand.

Any opinions are welcome:)

Thanks!

Greetings everyone. I'm usually someone who has studied this forum from afar. I would pick up bits of knowledge here and there, and well I finally decided to make a prop. A lot of people make props from franchises or movies that resonate with them. For me that particular movie is The Fifth Element. There are so many great props in the movie, but for me Korbens' gun stands out in every scene that it's in. If anyone has any questions about the build process please feel free to ask.

Here is a little snippet of my collection. I have a lot of small props and models that I collect and of course sneakers from movies and TV. I have a few more cool things to show and I want to upgrade the displays, the shelving and detolf cabinets aren't ideal, nor is the income to support the hobby but I manage. :)

Just a little about me, my name is Spencer, I'm 24 and I live in Melbourne, Australia... unfortunately. I've had a lot of great projects come across and definitely a lot of help, here and there I've had some silly little arguments that were largely my fault, ultimately I'd just like to be here, make some hobbiest buddies and enjoy some collabs.

My favourite movies are:
Jobs (2013)
Back to the Future 1, 2, 3.
Batman 1989
Batman Forever
Terminator and Terminator 2
Robocop
Cast Away
Days of Thunder
Top Gun
Lost Boys

TV:
Seinfeld
Frasier
Curb your Enthusiasm

You get the idea, lots of heroes journeys. I suffer from depression and panic disorder and movies have really saved my life. I'm still dealing with all of that, I find it pretty hard to make friends and it's good to be able to just come by and have a wander around the forum, so I figured I'd share my story.

If anybody has suggestions on furniture or display idea's I'd love to chat.

Is there anyone that can supply a set of replacement resin amber grips for the Fullcock Blade Runner water gun. They are to fit an unmodded handle.

Bioshock Syringe

I don't play video games, but I admit they have some really cool props. This was built for a customer. It's a giant syringe gun from the popular game Bioshock. It's wielded in the game by these horrifying little zombie girls who are using it to extract a vital substance from copses. Yeah, I know. Gross. This replica is created from a vintage gas pump handle, various pipes and fittings, a giant metal knitting needle and a baby bottle nipple. Internal electronics light up the glowing bottle. Delicious.

Ideas on etching dwarvish inscriptions?

$

I am working on a prop at the moment and cannot determine how I want to go about this one piece. I would have to make sure the lines are absolutely straight. I am trying to avoid EVA foam. I am working with more rigid materials. I considered using sculpey and casting from that, i tried wood burning on some scrap but was not thrilled with the results, I am looking into etching metal. I can't determine which route would be the best. Unless anyone has alternative ideas? I can carve these straight lines into a material easily but it is worrying about making them as clean, even, and straight as possible. I do not want it to look like it was hand drawn. I drew up a template already for the design. Just looking on the approach.

I posted about this a while back. I made the suitcase from scratch (I didn't make the locks or metal parts of the handle). I have now completed the contents too (as far as I'm able at the moment). I'm pretty pleased with it. A few people thought it was a real suitcase which, for all intents and purposes, I guess it is.

The Sorting Hat from Harry Potter

This was my first attempt at making a hat...or any type of garment really. The main body of the hat is made from a faux suede curtain, the patches are made from scraps of velvet, which I dyed, and a linen placemat. The straps are made from an old linen shirt.....I like to recycle/repurpose things. it is all hand sewn. I used acrylic paint, sandpaper, wax, a wire brush and a needle to age the fabrics. I also made a stand for the hat from a wooden candlestick and wooden bowl. I coloured and aged both to make them more harmonious. Click image for larger version.

Anovos Spengler Legacy Proton Pack

$

Hey guys,

I came across this new proton pack, which will be released by Anovos. It is quite pricey, but it is made from molds and castings of an original proton pack made by the production of Ghost Busters.
Looks very exciting but I'm quite confused by some of the information which is provided by Anovos.

Quote:

In June of 2017 ANOVOS was granted permission by Sony, Sony Archives, and Ghostcorp to mold and cast the original Dr. Spengler Hero Proton Pack (named this because of the "Spengler" annotation written on the back of the piece)
Really strange they refer to it as Spenglers Hero proton pack, since Spenglers hero pack was auctioned by Profiles in History in 2012.
Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No5DN5XGOh0

Does anyone have any more info on this? The two sources provide conflicting information, since (as I understand it) there was only one hero pack per Ghostbuster. The images also show these are two different proton packs, since a lot of details are not the same.

My Tomenosuke Blade Runner 2049 build

$

Hey all! I wanted to post some photos of the Tomenosuke 2049 blaster build I just "finished" (I say finished in quotes because there are a few stains that need to be dealt with, which means I need to do some sanding and rebluing on the receiver but am not in a hurry to do so.) I had absolutely NO idea what I was doing when I decided last Friday that I was going to mod my brand new blaster (which I received on Wednesday!), but I learned *so much* from the various tips and builds threads here -- thank you especially to Bash, Juajn7fernandez, veektohr, and Buch for leading the way, as well as to Carter Hopkins on the Facebook Blade Runner Blaster Addicts Support Group page and Mikael Cazzato, Joe Medlock, and Steven Aromlooi at the Facebook Propsummit group.

I'm going for a weathered look and will add the wires eventually, but for now, I'm incredibly happy with the results of my work.

Hope you all like what you see!

My process was basically adapted from the instructions found in various threads here, with one difference:

1) Vinegar bath on all metal parts for one hour each
2) 400 then 600 grit wet/dry sanding (wet or dry depending on what I was trying to accomplish... wet worked better for removing the traces of black from the paint that still remained, while dry made it easier to sand accurately but aggressively)
3) Liberon 0000 steel wool for a smooth finish, leaving a few nicks here and there for character (capped with an acetone scrub to remove the wool fibers that would lead to rusting problems later if they remained embedded in the receiver)
4) Perma blue using cotton swabs for the base coat, wiped down with dry paper towels to help even out the finish. Should take between 4-7 applications to get the right color (don't worry about the rainbow effect when you first apply... just keep at it!)
5) And here's something I discovered that helped to add a bit of an "aged" look and also let me focus more easily on smudges -- add more perma blue with a paper towel, which lets you rub with both wet and dry portions of the paper towel at the same time -- both where the fluid is soaking into the paper towel, and where the towel is dry right next to the wet spot.
6) I bought some Birchwood Casey Barricade Rust Preventive spray to coat the metal parts with later, but I haven't used it yet. There are a couple of spots I accidentally stained, so I'll have to soak/sand/scrub the bluing away to fix those before re-bluing and sealing the finish.

Thanks again, everyone! I'll be adding a steel barrel eventually, but I don't have any tools to saw the resin one off, so I'm leaving it for now.

Spaceballs ACE Comb - How would YOU build it?

A few of us will have our ******* costumes ready for a major Con in the fall and a giant comb would be a great accessory ... the question is, how would be build it?

It would have to be lightweight, strong enough for trooping, and possibly be able to breakdown for transport.

My question to the builders of RPF ... how would YOU build it?

Mara Jade - Mini Blaster

I have to equip a nice young lady with stuff for a Mara Jade costume.
While I found a very nice vendor for the belts and holsters http://deltaleatherworks.com who provides really 1st class leather works I couldn't find an appropriate blaster.
There are nice molded versions, but I wanted something special and unique, that is also a bit closer to the reference.

Since I'm working for decades with 3D-CAD and also CGI applications, I made an attempt to create my own version.
So that's what I've send (in subparts) to my printer guy this week. It's not really a cheap thing, since I selected the SLA method.

The picture in the middle is out of the fabulous research website of the renown prop builder Pam.
It shows the variants of appearances of the blaster in the comics. I have the comics but was thankful for this compilation during design.

So let's see how it comes out...

Help with simple Nostromo Destruct Sequence video and audio prop?

$
0
0
I'm thinking about creating a simple Nostromo Destruct Sequence prop, composed of a screen playing a looping video of the following animated graphic (or something similar): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO9x0y5lqD0

I'm not looking to create a replica prop of the console from the film, just a simple screen that displays the appropriate countdown graphic that I can mount on the wall in my garage. I might eventually incorporate the screen into a piece of film-appropriate styled wall paneling or an "airlock" door. The screen can be small-ish, around 7". The alarm/countdown sound would also play, preferably via audio out to semi-decent speakers.

My question is: What is a good approach for equipment here? Is there a good option for a screen that has an existing USB input (for the video) and audio output? Would a digital picture frame work? Something that is entirely self-contained and that I can just turn on and it plays the video and audio in a loop would be perfect.

I'm also trying to source an affordable yellow beacon light that could accompany the effect and be mounted nearby. I'm considering a yellow beacon light from a DJ/Party supplier, although I'm sure the quality isn't the greatest.

Any suggestions on the best approach to this would be great. Thanks!
