Have you guys seen this? It's built on an Airsoft grenade launcher...

I haven't been able to find any information out as to how to get my grubby paws on one. I scoured the Elfin Knights website and Facebook in hopes of getting info without any luck... Other than it appears to be a "Japan Only" release...

Frustrated, I purchased what looks to be fairly close to the Airsoft grenade launcher upon which it's built.

Is anyone else planning on doing a build? Or even is anyone planning on doing a run of conversion parts? I'm sure this is going to take me forever to complete since I don't have the time to devote to it at the moment.

Dark Apparatus project: Real Parts Sleuths, please take a look

Hi guys, although I'm sure it will take a while, I am attempting to make a replica of the Apparatus from the show Dark, as seen here:

This will consist of a wooden box, and probably 3D printed interior structure with a laser cut top, painted. I would love to do real brass but I think it would be too expensive. I'm currently commissioning a 3D model to use for creating the intricate top parts, but in the meantime I have been trying to hunt down any potential real parts used on the hero. I have found a few so far.

The Samsonite that the box travels in:

There's a few things that I think are real but haven't found yet. Could really use some help from more experience parts hunters here.

The fuel canister, seen below. Could be some kind of camping or military gear, like a map or toothbrush holder or something?

A few different things are stumping me in this next image. Those brass rollers. Seems to be some kind of thumb wheel or clock face screw but I haven't been able to find a match in hardware catalogs. The round brass objects below the rollers, with mini brass counterweights is another mystery. To the right we have another set of meters, which I have not been able to find in countless ebay searches. And finally, there is the brass hinge with six hinge sections. I have only been able to find 5 or 7 sections, not 6. Maddening.

Interactive Motorola MT500 Ghostbusters radio (and antenna)

$

I recently came into possesion of a vintage Motorola MT500 walkie-talkie. It's not the exact model which was used in the Ghostbusters (1984) movie but it was close enough for me to work from. When I got it the device was non-functional and had an inacurate antenna.

In these two videos I take the original radio apart, gut the innards and replace with a audio FX circuit board from Adafruit. My second (much shorter) video shows me making a replica "stubby" antenna in real-time to show how quick and easy it is. I thought some people here might like to see the videos. Remember to watch 'til the end of the first one... you wont be disappointed!*

Items used:

  • Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board + 2x2W Amp - WAV/OGG Trigger -16MB -
  • Adafruit LiIon/LiPoly Backpack Add-On for Pro Trinket/ItsyBitsy
  • M8 (8mmØ) Stainless Steel Socket Head Allen Bolt
  • 8mm I.D. Clear Plastic Hose PVC Tube
  • M12 Vinyl rubber bolt end cap
  • 14mm shiny shrink wrap tubing

*you may be disappointed haha

- - - Updated - - -

Afterthoughts:

The speaker that came with the radio demands a little too much power than can be driven by the board and it's a little quiet. It sounds ok when in a room and on camera but at a noisy con its quite hard to hear. I'm going to replace it with a couple of smaller 2watt speakers which should be a lot louder.

Classic BSG Viper Pilot Leg Computer

When piloting the galaxy, don't forget your Sharp slide rule calculators... er... your Leg Computer.

The production certainly had a deal with Sharp. Any time a calculator showed up, it was Sharp branded... usually underneath a label of some sort to obscure the fact. There were two styles of Leg Computers. Both utilized the MXU-63/P lighted pilot kneeboard but had different calculators. The first was likely an early production test using the EL-8133 calcs. It was mainly seen in early production photos and was simply two calculators attached to an unmodified kneeboard. The second utilized modified kneeboard with a custom vacuformed tray attached to hold two EL-5804 slide rule calcs. It also housed some cool blinky lights. It is the version that is most recognizable. While visually cool, it didn't see much screen time. After buying a vintage kneeboard for my personal cosplay I think I know why. These things have a nasty habit of sliding down your leg while walking around. Makes sense. Good pilots tend to stay seated while flying. But the production probably decided they were too much trouble and it quickly became a background prop only. It also shows up in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century in various forms.

Reference shots...

I decided to create an idealized version of this prop. Acquiring vintage kneeboards is bothersome and the price fluctuates quite a bit. Also feel a modified design would create a more streamlined and otherworldly look. Perhaps something that the production might have done with time and resources to further obscure the origin of this prop.

Using screen caps, I stared with the basic shape sized to fit my kneeboard base and hold two vintage calculators....

The blinky lights in the middle sit underneath a clear sheet which, from the screen caps, seems to be angled so I made sure to include that element. The map light lens is from my authentic kneeboard, stripped of paint. I'll be molding and casting that in clear resin...

Using the base plate of my kneeboard. Had to do quite a bit of repair work here, filling holes, etc...

Design of the top tray finished and ready for molding. The clear lens will mount to the "L" and LEDs will be housed in the sockets. Also a battery compartment...

Time for the fun part. Building the electronic circuit. I did my best to sync the timing to that seen on the pilot episode, "Saga Of A Star World." A bit difficult given the original prop used grain-of-wheat bulbs that brighten-and-fade vs. the instant on-off of LEDs. After finalizing the design, sent off the Gerber file to the PCB house...

Another difficult item to locate is the EL-5804 so I molded the components for a replica. I'll be casting the keys using custom dyed resin and decorating the replicas using custom decals for an authentic look...

First cast of the top tray and test fit of an authentic EL-5804 and unfinished replica...

First prototype assembly with my authentic calculators. The original props used some form of metallic tape to cover the Sharp logo. I opted for a resin replica of the tape. I think it looks more substantial, perhaps like a heat sink or some other functional component...

To be continued...

2001 a space odyssey

I am going to be undertaking the project of 3D printing, finishing, and painting the clavius helmets from 2001.

I was wondering if anyone has the X Y and Z dimensions from the screen used props.

The other thing would be the neck rings. Are they custom machined or did they come off of something?

Thanks for all of the help. I will be posting updates as I go and if anyone wants to help me with more parts and where to find them please let me know.

Thinkjedi's Agonizer from Star Trek: TOS

$

I've got a wild hair and decided to have a go at drawing up an agonizer prop rom the TOS episodes Mirror, Mirror and Day of the Dove in SolidWorks. This is what I have so far. I based this off pics of one of the actual props from Richard Coyle's website (racprops.com). The pics are really low-resolution, but they have measurements of the prop, so they were a big help. I've done my best to get the prop looking right.

My plan is to make both a static prop and a prop with lights/sound produced on an SLA resin printer. SLA resin printers produce stunning output requiring very little cleanup. Check out my Singlepoint repro build thread here to see what an SLA print looks like hot off the printer.

For now, I'm posting a vid showing the 3D rendering of the prop. I'll be producing a prototype on an FDM printer in PLA this weekend and will post pics of it when it's done.
Comments/suggestions are appreciated.

Blade Runner 1982 - Force Badge

While I'm working away on my metal coyle blaster I decided to work on the force badge as a side project.

I started by bringing the original image into rhino, my preferred modeling software, to pull measurements and allow me to print templates accurately to scale. I started with dimensions given over on propsummit by @Buch which are Height 4 1/8" H (10,5 cm) x Width 3 1/8" W (7,9 cm).

After scaling the picture in rhino I decided to make the walls 1.5mm thick and 6mm high. The 6mm high was a total guess because the available reference pics don't show the badge from the side to get a accurate dimension. I contemplated sending the frame out to print but decided that it would be easy enough to make it out of styrene. I printed out some templates from the model to use for cutting out the styrene pieces.

The badge shape piece was cut out from 1mm styrene and served as the base shape to bend the 1.5mm sides around. I used a heat gun to soften up the 1.5mm styrene then bent it around the base and welded together with plastruct plastic weld. I did the short sides first making the strips much longer than they needed to be then trimmed them down after welding. Then I added the long sides and finished up with some sanding to blend the sides together.

Also I got the center bezel. It is a found piece, a coin bezel meant for holding silver dollars onto belt buckles. The source I used only had gold at the time but I have since found the silver version that I will use on the finished pieces.

I've spent some time and come up with a 3D Printable filler block for the cylinder void. This gets things close while still being under the surface, This added a large amount of rigidity to my own build and cut down on the amount of Bondo I had to use.

I'll put the picture of the in-place units when I get home, but I wanted to share these ASAP in case someone else was trying to get one done by the release of Ready Player One.

This is modeled to be the right side, so you'll have to mirror it for the time being, I'll make it a point to update that this week. I printed mine on a WahHao Duplicator i3 v2.1 with Inland White PLA at (IIRC) 0.22mm and 210/65 *C nozzle/bed with a 2mm brim.

The guns are available from Amazon for cheap.

BTTF Hoverboard history

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some info on how they built the original Hoverboards for BTTF 2? From what I've seen so far I know they used some foam boards and some wood ones depending on what was needed of it for each scene. I guess I'm just wondering where the other parts of the board come from or if they were just scratch built then cast. I really enjoy hearing the back story of these. Thanks!

Anyone Intrested in a prop replica from Star Trek 6 (Helm)

So I have a chance at making a replica of part of the help panel. The section of buttons with those levers Valaris used to move the ship and the red button Chekov used to fire the torpedo at the Klingon Ship. But it would cost allot of money to make it, 500 to 800 dollars. I am wondering if anyone would buy it and how much you think it would be worth?

Two were used on the Helm/Navigatiion Panel one was on the science station and one on Communications. They also had one on the transporter/torpedo control. But if I am going to spend that type of money I need to know that I can make it back.

Let me know if anyone else is interested in this. I will post a video on the replication process.

I won this on eBay and it’s a really nice replica. I’m trying to find the source. A TPZ member said the sticker is a Todd/DStines but the scanner isn’t. Someone else thought it might be a Guy Wakefield Scanner but a search was unsuccessful. The eBay description said it spins at an accurate speed but a review of a few episodes shows it’s slower. I’m going to put fresh batteries in to see if it speeds up.

So here is the situation,
Thought I would post on the board for some sound advice or some direction to take. So here is my project.

A beautifully cast resin Thor Ragnarok helmet.

Problem: After painting and masking my paint peels completely up and I don't mean just the metallic paint it goes all the way back to the resin. Straight through the plastic primer. I have been starting to have this issue as of late with rattle can paints and am about to give up. Can some one here chime in and give me a good alternative or better yet give me a paint selection that they use to complete a similar project. I will add that it was the wonderful Tamiya tape that peeled up. I realize it could be a multitude of issues but for the love I have been having this occur almost with regularity that I am willing to start going in the direction of buying a larger compressor and using some high dollar paint. Any help would be most appreciated...Thanks for everything you all do.

I am working on sculpting a replica of The Hand of Glory from Harry Potter. It is constructed from wire, papier-mache and air dry clay. I thought I'd share my work in progress. Looking forward to painting it.

Question about Prop Measurements

So I've gotten back into prop making after getting a 3D Printer. As such, I wanted to open a general question about obtaining measurements for prop designing. I apologize if there is discussion elsewhere on this topic, I couldn't find any.

I know the general process is to obtain a plethora of reference photos, blow them up, and just meticulously measure relative dimensions against known dimensions and estimates.

I was curious any tricks or best practices people in the community have come up with.

I was also curious about tools or software that could be utilized to improve the process.

One piece of software I'm researching is Fiji/ImageJ (https://fiji.sc/) (https://imagej.net/Welcome). It's a open-source suite of tools for analyzing images in Science (Fiji is a preconfigured distro of ImageJ). Most of the functionality isn't applicable, but it does have measurement capability where you can draw a line and assign that to a known scale, then draw other lines and polygons over the image and get the relative dimensions. The interface leaves a lot to be desired, and I'm struggling to do basic things like get the lengths of all the sides of a polygon, labeling and editing lines later, saving and restoring a work session, and relating dimensions against multiple images.

An ideal software I think would be able to load multiple images in a work session, draw and label lines and polygons, link scale lines between images (say I can determine scale of a detail at one angle against a known dimension, and then scale another angle view against the detail I calculated), and maybe do some basic perspective correction. All of this could then give me a dimension list for modeling in Fusion360.

I'm not sure if this can be accomplished with other existing software such as Fusion 360 or FreeCAD.

So thoughts?

The acquisition and creation of this Prop blaster has put me down the line of collecting the Indiana Solo Deckard trilogy of blasters/guns.
